Keep your eyes peeled for emerging talents at Sundance or Cannes.

Best Director: The Usual Suspects (and Some Underdogs)

This category usually mirrors the Best Picture nominees, but there's always a surprise or two. I wouldn't be surprised to see Greta Gerwig's name here again if her film is a critical darling. This is a big deal to be considered for best director, so it's usually people that have proven themselves before.

Other possible candidates could include some established auteurs or, possibly, a breakthrough director with a film that gains significant traction with critics. The film festival circuit is always a hotbed for discovering future Oscar winners, remember Everything Everywhere All at Once? Nobody predicted that one!
