2025 Oscars: Predicting the Costume Design Nominees (and My Wild Guess Who'll Win!)

So, the 2025 Oscars are still a ways off, but as a massive movie buff – and a total costume design nerd – I’m already totally geeking out about who might snag a nomination for Best Costume Design. Think elaborate creature designs, futuristic armor, or mind-bending textiles—the weirder the better, really!

• Indie Darlings: The Academy loves to show its diverse side by including smaller, independent films that surprise everyone with their innovative costuming. Usually, they are period pieces, or something with a unique style that really makes an impact.

Here's my totally-unofficial, could-be-completely-wrong prediction for a potential nominee: I'm betting on a superhero movie with some seriously unique takes on classic comic book costumes. Like, they could go ultra-realistic, or maybe they'll do something totally avant-garde and unexpected. Either way, it’ll be interesting.

The Things I Learned the Hard Way (aka My Epic Costume Fails)

Back in the day – we’re talking early 2000s here – I tried to make my own Halloween costume. I thought I was being super creative...I was aiming for a futuristic warrior look. It was a disaster. Seriously, a disaster. It looked more like I raided a thrift store and glued aluminum foil to whatever I could find. My research wasn’t too in-depth, which shows. The whole thing fell apart halfway through the party. Let's just say I learned a lot about the importance of strong construction and planning that night!

This is the part where I risk it all. My gut says the winner will be the costume designer from a quirky indie film, probably a period piece, which does surprisingly well. It will have received fantastic reviews, but it will be a film few have heard of. Think something both beautiful and thought-provoking—something that transcends mere spectacle and speaks to something deeper. It'll be a movie that you'll go, "Oh my gosh, I have to see that." I could be completely wrong, of course, but hey, that's half the fun!
