Antioch High School Updates: Navigating the New Normal

Hey everyone! So, Antioch High – man, things have been crazy lately, right? I've got a kiddo who just finished their sophomore year there, and let me tell you, it's been a rollercoaster. This post is all about keeping you in the loop on some of the major updates at Antioch High. Think of me as your friendly neighborhood insider.

First off, let's talk about the new principal. Remember Mr. Henderson? Well, he moved on to a district-level position, which is awesome for him, but we got a new principal, Ms. Evans. She seems pretty cool, really focused on student involvement. She's already implemented some changes, some good, some… well, we’re still figuring those out.

<h3>The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of the New Initiatives</h3>

One of the biggest changes is the revamped extracurricular program. They added a ton of new clubs, like a coding club which my kid loves, and a debate team that’s already racking up some wins. This is a HUGE improvement because the after-school options were seriously lacking before. Seriously, it’s night and day. They’ve even improved the funding for existing clubs—they finally got new equipment for the drama club!

However, there’s also been some growing pains. The new scheduling system is a bit of a mess. It's this super-duper complicated online thing, and even I, a tech-savvy parent, struggle with it. There's been a few snafus with class assignments and things. It's frustrating but they are working on it.

Another big change is the focus on STEM education. They've added more advanced science courses, and they’re doing a better job connecting those courses with real-world applications. This is great for students who are interested in those fields. Plus, there's a new partnership with a local tech company which is offering internships, so that's pretty rad.

But here's where things get a little tricky. The increase in STEM courses has, unfortunately, led to some cutbacks in the arts programs. Not massive cuts, mind you, but it’s definitely noticeable. We’re trying to rally the parents to support the arts programs, which were already somewhat underfunded. This is where community involvement becomes crucial.

The school's communication has improved too. They’re now using a dedicated app for announcements and updates—this is way better than the old system of relying on emails. I know, right? Seems obvious, but a dedicated app makes it easier to track important deadlines, school events, and announcements about changes to the school calendar. They are even sending out regular newsletters now. This is a good move that improves transparency with the parents, which is very important.

One thing I wish they would improve is the communication regarding the school’s website. It is a little outdated. It doesn’t offer much in terms of current information, and it can be difficult to navigate. A bit of a website overhaul would make all the difference.

Okay, so Antioch High isn’t perfect, and it’s had its ups and downs. But overall, they’re heading in the right direction. If you have a student heading to Antioch High School, or if your child is already attending, here are my top tips:

• Communicate with teachers. Building a good relationship with your child's teachers is key.
• Utilize the school resources. Take advantage of tutoring, counseling, and extracurricular activities.
