Florida's Rare Snow: Video, Photos – A Southerner's Surreal Experience
Hey y'all! Let me tell you, seeing snow in Florida? That's about as likely as finding a gator wearing a tiny sombrero. But guess what? It happened. To me. And let me tell you, it was a total mind-melt.
I'm from central Florida, born and raised. Sunshine, humidity, and the occasional hurricane – that's my normal. Snow? Nope. Not even in my wildest dreams. I've seen pictures, of course, but experiencing it firsthand? That's a whole different ballgame.

The Day the South Froze Over

This past winter (I'm still processing it!), we had this crazy cold snap. I mean, crazy. We're talking temperatures dipping down into the twenties – unheard of around here. My kids, bless their hearts, were beside themselves with excitement. They’d seen snow in movies, but never in real life. They thought it was gonna be like, a Disney movie type of thing...fluffy, and easy to play in. Spoiler alert: it wasn't quite that picture-perfect.
I remember checking the weather religiously. Every app, every news channel – I was glued to it. When they finally did predict snow, I almost didn't believe it. I mean, I’ve seen flurries before, but this was supposed to be the real deal. The big one.

My First (and hopefully not last) Snow Day

The morning of the snowfall started off with a total shock. It wasn't a gradual dusting, oh no. It was a full-blown blizzard! Okay, maybe not full-blown, but for Florida, it was epic. Big fluffy flakes were coming down like crazy! It was beautiful, in a totally bizarre way. I grabbed my phone and started snapping pictures – I mean, who wouldn't? This was historical!
My kids went absolutely bonkers. Building snowmen (they looked more like snow-blobs, haha!), having snowball fights (my arms still hurt!), and generally losing their minds with joy. It was heartwarming, to be honest.

Capturing the Moment: Video and Photos

I documented the whole thing, of course. Videos of the kids playing, time-lapse shots of the snow accumulating, close-ups of the snowflakes – the works. I even got a few shots of the rare sight of palm trees covered in a light layer of snow. It was surreal.
Getting good video and photos in the snow takes some planning, though. The cold can affect your phone's battery life, so I made sure it was fully charged. And I used my phone's "pro" mode to adjust the settings for better shots in low light conditions. Trust me, that matters.
I also had to think about protecting my phone. I had it in a waterproof and shockproof case, because well, you never know what could happen in the cold.

Lessons Learned (and a few bloopers)

Here’s where I have to admit that I messed up. I was so focused on getting the perfect shot that I almost forgot to enjoy the moment! Don't be like me. Put down the phone sometimes and just soak it in. Trust me, the memories are better than any photo.
Pro-Tip: Check the weather forecast religiously. Download a good weather app, and be prepared for unexpected changes. You never know what crazy weather might hit Florida!
Pro-Tip: Keep your phone charged! A dead battery during a once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm? Epic fail.
Pro-Tip: Protect your phone from the cold and elements. Consider a waterproof case.
Florida's snow may be rare, but it's certainly memorable. If you ever get the chance to experience it, grab your camera (and your gloves!), and make some memories. And hey, send me a picture! I'd love to see it.
