Forestry Rally: Donegal Championship Begins – A Spectator's Guide & My Epic Fail

Hey everyone! So, the Donegal Forestry Rally is kicking off, and I'm buzzing! For those who don't know, this is a huge deal in Irish motorsport. Think mud, mayhem, and machines that could crush a small car. I've been a spectator for years, and let me tell you, it's an experience you won't forget. But, let me also warn you – it ain’t all sunshine and roses. I learned that the hard way.

My First (and Last?) Attempt at Rally Photography

Last year, I decided I'd be super pro and take some amazing photos. I bought a fancy new camera – a big, heavy beast of a thing – and spent hours watching YouTube tutorials on how to capture the speed and the drama. I even packed a tripod! Yeah, a tripod. In a muddy field. I should have known better.

The first stage was exciting! The cars were screaming past, throwing up huge clouds of dirt. I got some okay shots, but nothing mind-blowing. Then, disaster struck. I tripped over a particularly nasty root, sending my tripod (and my expensive camera) flying. The camera landed face down in the mud. I'm still paying off the repair bill!

Lesson learned: Leave the fancy tripod at home! A smaller, more portable camera is far better suited for the rough and tumble of a forestry rally. Trust me on this one.

Where to Catch the Action – Stages and Spectator Points

The Donegal Championship is known for its challenging stages. These aren't your manicured race tracks; they’re rugged, winding forest roads. Knowing where to watch is key. The official rally program will list all the stages and spectator points. You can usually find them online, too.

Some stages are more popular than others. This means crowds. Plan ahead and arrive early. Seriously, early! I once got stuck in a traffic jam for an hour, missing the entire start of a stage. It sucked. Big time.

Tips for Spectator Success:

• Check the weather forecast: Donegal weather can be unpredictable. Pack accordingly! Rain gear is a must.
• Wear sturdy footwear: You'll be doing a lot of walking, often on uneven ground. Avoid flip-flops. I repeat: avoid flip-flops!
• Bring snacks and drinks: There are usually limited food and drink options available at spectator points. Be prepared!
• Respect the environment: Stay on designated spectator areas, don't litter and don't block access roads. It's the responsible thing to do.

The Thrill of the Rally

Despite my photographic mishap, the Donegal Forestry Rally is an incredible spectacle. The skill of the drivers is breathtaking, the cars are amazing, and the atmosphere is electric. The roar of the engines, the smell of burning rubber, and the sheer power of these machines...it's an unforgettable experience.

This year, I'm going back, but I'm leaving the tripod at home! I've learned my lesson. Maybe I'll even get some decent pictures this time.
