New Writers in Residence Announced! A Year of Ink-Stained Fingers and Unexpected Joy

Hey everyone! So, guess what? The big news is finally out – the new Writers in Residence have been announced! And honestly? I'm still buzzing. This whole thing has been a rollercoaster, from the initial nervous excitement of applying to the sheer terror of waiting for the decision. It reminds me a bit of waiting for my college acceptance letters...only, you know, with way more existential dread.

My Own (Slightly Messy) Journey

This whole writer-in-residence gig feels surreal. I mean, I applied on a whim, honestly. I’d been writing my little heart out – mostly short stories, some terrible poetry (don't even ask!), and a novel that’s currently residing in a drawer somewhere, gathering dust bunnies. I figured, what the heck? Worst case scenario, I get some solid rejection practice. Best case, well… this happened.

Remember that time I almost didn't apply because I was convinced my work wasn't "good enough"? Yeah, don't do that. Seriously. Imposter syndrome is a sneaky little gremlin, and it will try to sabotage your dreams. Don’t let it win. That's lesson number one.

Practical Tips for Aspiring Writers in Residence (and Everyone Else!)

So, what have I learned from this whole wild ride? A few things, actually. I wish someone had told me these things sooner, so here's a list for you guys. Consider it my little gift to the universe (and to you!).

• Write every day, even if it's just for 15 minutes. This helps build consistency, which is key. It's like going to the gym – show up regularly and the results will eventually come. Seriously, even if you only manage to write one mediocre sentence, it's better than nothing!
• Join a writing group. Feedback is invaluable, especially that tough love you get from people who aren't your mom (sorry, Mom!). They can help you see your own blind spots – those little issues that you just don't notice because you're too close to your work.
• Read. Read. Read. This may seem obvious but seriously, consume everything. Don't just read things in your genre. Branch out, explore different styles, and observe how other writers craft their stories. It’s like studying different art forms.
• Don't be afraid to revise (and revise again). This is a tough one, you know? Letting go of your precious words takes serious courage. But trust me, it's worth it. That first draft is rarely the best.
• Find your writing community. This is super important. It doesn’t matter if its online or in-person, connect with others. It helps to have people who understand the struggles.

The Future is (Hopefully) Bright!

So, what's next? Well, I'm looking forward to the next twelve months. It’s going to be a whirlwind. I plan on using this amazing opportunity to focus on finishing my novel. Maybe even getting it published, fingers crossed! There will be workshops, readings, collaborations...the whole shebang.

The best part? I’ve already connected with some amazing other writers. It’s a really cool community.

I might even finally get around to tackling that poetry thing again...or maybe not. We'll see. The possibilities are exciting.
