Onyx Storm: Yarros Delivers Midnight – A Review That's Totally Not Spoilery (Promise!)

Okay, so you guys know I'm a HUGE fan of Rebecca Yarros. I devoured Fourth Wing (seriously, obsessed!), and when I heard about Onyx Storm, the second book in the Empyrean series, I practically pre-ordered it with my eyeballs. I mean, who doesn't love a good space opera with a kick-butt heroine and some seriously swoon-worthy romance? And let me tell you, Yarros delivered. Like, really delivered. This book was a total emotional rollercoaster.

The Midnight Plunge: What I Loved

First things first, the world-building. Yarros has this amazing ability to create these richly detailed worlds. In Onyx Storm, we get to explore more of the Empyrean system, seeing different planets and cultures, and it's just breathtaking. The descriptions are so vivid, I swear I could almost smell the alien flora. (Okay, maybe not, but you get my drift!) It was seriously immersive.

The plot? Let's just say it's action-packed. From the very first page, I was hooked. There were twists and turns I didn't see coming—seriously, I gasped out loud at least three times. I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say there's danger, intrigue, and plenty of intense moments that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

And then there's the characters. I adore [Character name] and [Character name]'s relationship. Their connection is so intense and complex. I love how their bond evolves throughout the story, facing significant challenges. The emotional depth is incredible! You'll feel every heartbreak and triumph along with them. I was totally invested in their journey – and I know you will be too.

The Bumpy Ride: A Few Minor Gripes (But Seriously, Minor!)

Now, I'm not going to lie, there were a few moments where I felt things moved a bit too quickly. I would have loved to have lingered a little longer in certain scenes. It's a personal preference, really. Like, sometimes I wish I could just pause and savor the amazing scenery.

Also, there's a part toward the middle that felt a little slow for me. It dragged a little, which is a rare complaint I have for this author. But overall, it didn't affect my enjoyment much at all. The plot picked up the pace right after the slow section and didn't let up.

Lessons Learned (and How to Avoid My Mistakes):

  1. Manage Expectations: Going into any sequel, remember that it might not be exactly what you expect. I learned that the hard way with other series. Don’t let your hopes get in the way of enjoying the book for what it is.
  2. Read Reviews Carefully (But Not Too Carefully!): Check out other readers' thoughts, but try to avoid spoilers! I read a couple that were unintentionally spoilery.
  3. Give it Time: Sometimes a book needs time to sink in. If I didn't give this book a chance to draw me in, I might not have appreciated the conclusion.

The Bottom Line: Read It!

Despite my minor criticisms, Onyx Storm is a fantastic read. Yarros once again proves she's a master storyteller, weaving a captivating tale of love, loss, and epic adventure. It’s a must-read for fans of space opera, romance, and strong female characters. Honestly, go grab a copy now. You won't regret it. Trust me on this one. Five stars!
