Perez, Wicked, Banshees Lead Oscars: My Wild Ride Predicting the Winners (and Totally Bombing!)

Okay, so the Oscars. Huge deal, right? This year was, whew, something else. I'm a total film buff, always have been, and I thought I had this year's Oscars all figured out. Boy, was I wrong. I mean, totally wrong. Let's dive into my predictions, my spectacular failures, and what I learned about predicting the Oscars (spoiler: it's harder than it looks!).

My Bold (and Mostly Wrong) Predictions

Going into the night, I had everything planned. My Oscar pool was legendary, or at least I thought it would be. I'd been following the buzz, reading all the Variety and Hollywood Reporter articles, analyzing the critics' reviews, and listening to every single podcast discussing the nominees. I felt like a freakin' Oscar expert. I even made a spreadsheet! (Don't judge, it's what we nerds do).

I was sure "Everything Everywhere All at Once" would sweep. I mean, the critical acclaim, the box office success...it was a sure thing, right? Wrong. While it did win big, not everything went according to my very meticulously crafted prediction model. I was predicting a Michelle Yeoh win in Best Actress, definitely. And it happened, which was a total win.

And then there was "The Banshees of Inisherin." I figured, with all the Best Picture buzz and the critical darling status... this one was in the bag. It got some wins, sure, but not as many as I’d predicted. I was shocked when it lost Best Picture to "Everything Everywhere All At Once," but it's a great film. It totally deserved the nominations.

"The Fabelmans" was another one I had high hopes for. Spielberg. Need I say more? It didn't win in the major categories, but it snagged one. That was a nice surprise.

Then there's "Wicked." I wasn't predicting any wins for it in major categories, but I was looking forward to the possible musical performances. That was a highlight of the night. The music was amazing. Overall, the show was fantastic. It really showed that live television still has a place in our media-saturated world.

What Went Wrong (and What I Learned)

So, what happened? Why did my Oscar predictions go so spectacularly wrong? Well, for one, I focused too much on critical acclaim and box office numbers. I underestimated the Academy's love for surprise wins and their unpredictable nature.

Lesson 1: Don't rely solely on critical darling status. The Academy is its own entity with its own mysterious preferences.

Lesson 2: Pay attention to the entire awards season, not just the final few weeks. Look for patterns, but don't overanalyze.

My Oscar Takeaways (Beyond My Epic Fail)

Despite my disastrous predictions, the Oscars were still amazing. The performances were electrifying, the speeches were moving, and the whole production was a spectacle. The show itself is a piece of art, a big event that many people look forward to each year. It's a really big deal!

Next year? I’m sticking to my spreadsheet, but I'm also going to diversify my approach. I'll pay closer attention to the actual voting process, to the political landscape and the trends within the industry itself. Who knows? Maybe next year I'll actually nail a few predictions.

Until then, I'll be cheering on the winners (even if I didn't predict them). And maybe I'll start working on my Oscar prediction model a little earlier. And next year I’m going to start a little earlier. Wish me luck!
