Rancho Bernardo Fire: Evacuations, Closures – A Close Call

Okay, so, remember that crazy Rancho Bernardo fire last year? Man, it was intense. I was living right on the edge of the evacuation zone – seriously, my neighbor's fence was practically on fire. Talk about a wake-up call! Let me tell you, that whole experience really taught me a lot about fire safety and emergency preparedness. And I'm sharing it all with you guys, because trust me, you don't want to go through what we did.

The Day the Sky Turned Orange

It all started pretty innocently. I mean, it was a hot day, sure, but nothing out of the ordinary for San Diego. Then, around 3 pm, the smoke started. At first, it was just a little haze, you know? But then, it got thicker and thicker, this nasty orange-brown smoke that filled the air. It smelled like burning wood and... well, something else, something acrid I couldn't quite place.

My phone started blowing up with alerts – mandatory evacuation this, road closures that. Panic started to set in. It was a total scramble. I had like, five minutes to grab essential documents, my pets (two fluffy cats who were NOT happy about the situation), and some clothes. Let me tell you, packing in a panic is NOT fun! I left half my stuff. Seriously, I forgot my phone charger. Rookie mistake, I know.

Lessons Learned the Hard Way: Evacuation Preparedness

This experience, let me tell you, was a HUGE learning curve. I learned some things the hard way, and I'm sharing them to help you out:

• Have an evacuation plan: Don't just think about it – write it down. Include meeting points, alternate routes, and contact info for family and friends. Practice it. Seriously, the more prepared you are, the calmer you'll be. This saved my neighbor! They had practiced their plan and left immediately.

• Gather your "go-bag": This isn't some fancy camping kit – it's a bag with essential documents (insurance, medical records, IDs), medications, cash, a first-aid kit, and maybe a couple of days worth of clothing and non-perishable food. Keep it easily accessible, ideally near your door. Mine is right by the door now, fully stocked!

• Sign up for emergency alerts: This is crucial. Knowing when and how to get information about closures and evacuations is essential. My county provides alerts through text, email, and an app. This isn't a drill, people. This is a real safety net.

• Know your evacuation routes: There's usually more than one, and knowing which route is the safest can make the difference. Check your local government website for evacuation maps and instructions before a fire even starts.

• Charge your devices the night before! This one sounds silly, but it will save you a ton of stress! You need that phone to communicate, access emergency alerts, and use GPS.

Dealing with Road Closures and Evacuation Zones

The road closures around Rancho Bernardo during that fire were brutal. I-15 was shut down for a while, and many side streets were impassable. Traffic was a nightmare. The authorities did their best, but it was chaotic. This reinforces the importance of having multiple evacuation routes in mind.

This event, even with it's chaotic mess, made me appreciate the hard work of firefighters and emergency personnel. They were amazing – putting their lives on the line to protect others. We were incredibly lucky; my home was spared. Many others were not so lucky.

Moving Forward: Staying Safe in Fire Season

Living in San Diego means living with fire season. It’s a reality we all have to face. But by being prepared – having an evacuation plan, a well-stocked go-bag, knowing our routes – we can minimize the risks and stay safe. Learn from my mistakes, people, and stay safe! It's a lot better to over-prepare than to under-prepare. Trust me.
