RTE 2FM New Lineup: Garrihy Returns – A Listener's Perspective

Okay, so you guys know how much I love 2FM, right? It's been my go-to station for, like, ever. So when they announced the new lineup – especially the Garrihy return – I was buzzing! Seriously, buzzing. I almost threw my toast across the kitchen. But let's dive into this whole shebang.

The Big News: Doireann's Back!

The biggest news, obviously, was Doireann Garrihy coming back to the weekday afternoon slot. I mean, the woman's a legend! Remember when she had that hilarious on-air mishap with… what was it… the rogue microphone? Classic 2FM moment. Anyway, her return felt like a breath of fresh air. It's like welcoming back an old friend. And her show is honestly so entertaining. I’ve always loved her sense of humour, and it shines through. She's really good at interacting with her listeners too, which makes it feel really personal.

My Early Thoughts – And One Major Misstep

My initial reaction was pure joy. Doireann’s voice and personality are instantly recognizable and comforting, a key ingredient for a successful radio show. But, and this is a big but, I did feel there could've been more thought given to the overall flow of the afternoon schedule, It felt a little rushed at the beginning. I think they are still finding their stride.

It's not just her though; they've made some other tweaks to the schedule, so it's going to take time to adjust. It feels slightly chaotic, so I am giving it time to settle. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Beyond Doireann: Other Notable Changes

There were other changes too, of course. Some I loved, some… well, I'm still on the fence about. It's like that time I tried that new spicy ramen – initially exciting, but then my mouth was on fire! This is Radio, not Ramen.

The new evening show…I’m not sure about that yet. I need to give it a couple more weeks to really get a feel for it. But we need to give this time, right?

What Makes a Great Radio Show (Learned the Hard Way)

Okay, so I'm no radio expert – I just really love listening – but from my experience, here's what makes a winning formula:

• Strong personality: The host needs to be engaging, relatable and funny. Think Doireann Garrihy.
• Great music selection: The songs have to flow and fit the vibe. This isn’t rocket science.
• Listener interaction: Make your listeners feel heard! Respond to calls and messages. It’s a dialogue, not a monologue.
• Solid Structure: A solid structure helps keep listeners engaged, like a good story. Even a funny one.
• Consistent Branding: This is important; it gives listeners a sense of what to expect. Like that delicious slice of cake that you always crave for.

You know, I used to think making a good radio show was easy. Then I tried to create my own podcast (don't ask!). Let's just say it taught me a whole lot about the hard work and planning that goes into something like this. It was brutal. But it also helped me appreciate the talent of the professionals behind my favourite shows, such as 2FM. I'm not saying I'd ever try again, it would be way too much work.

Overall, I'm cautiously optimistic about the new 2FM lineup. Doireann's return is a massive win, and I'm excited to see how things develop. It takes time, I know.
